Left-handed tracing worksheets

Turn on left-handed mode and the stroke directions change so a left-handed child pulls the pencil rather than pushing it. The letters and bubble outlines stay the same.

Sample, left-handed mode: horizontal strokes go right to left, circles go clockwise.

Why left-handed children struggle with some strokes

A right-hander pulls the pencil along a horizontal line from left to right. A left-hander making the same stroke pushes the pencil, which often makes the hand cover the writing, hook the wrist and wobble the line.

Teachers and parents most often report trouble with cross strokes, such as the bars of E, F, H, T and Z and the 4, 5 and 7, and with round letters and numbers.

What left-handed mode changes

Horizontal strokes are drawn right to left, so they are pulled. Bowls and circles in letters such as O, C, a, d, g and q, and in digits such as 0, 8 and 9, run clockwise. Verticals and diagonals stay the same.

The clockwise direction for circles is our best reading of parent and teacher reports, not an established rule, and advice differs between schools. You can switch the mode off at any time and compare the sheets.

Tips for parents and teachers

Seat the child so the writing hand does not cover the work, with the paper slightly tilted to the right where that helps. Do not push a child to write with the right hand. Praise steady lines rather than speed.

Ask a teacher or an occupational therapist if a child keeps struggling with grip or posture. A worksheet cannot replace that advice.
